63-Day Newsletter, 2008 Summer Test

July 23, 2008

Attached is the 63-day summary for 120 bulls and 14 get-of-sire groups being evaluated in the 2008 Summer Test. Bulls were weighed on July 22 and their average weight was 1092 lbs vs. 944 on June 17 for a 35-day ADG of 4.32 lbs. Overall, for the 63 days, test ADG is 4.13 lbs.

With few exceptions, health status has been good during the period. However, on July 22, bulls with sub-par performance were checked and treated accordingly. Unfortunately, one bull was lost during the period due to an intestinal obstruction.

During the 35-day period, bulls consumed on average, 29.5 lbs of a blend of corn silage and wheat silage, and 11.4 lbs of concentrate feed (corn grain, DDGS, and balancer). Dry matter intake averaged 22.9 lbs daily per bull or near 2.26 lbs DM per 100 lbs of body weight. Daily feed cost for the period averaged $2.11 per bull.

On July 7, Bonnie Bradford, Premier Ultrasound, scanned 39 of the older bulls. We are still waiting on the results from breed associations. Once received, we will get you a copy of the report. Remaining bulls will be scanned on Tuesday, September 16.

Thanks to the following that helped weigh bulls on July 22: Officers and Directors: Robert Wubben, Jim Day, Jerry Roberts, and Norman Voyles, Jr.; Extension Educators: Brad Shelton and David Redman; Feldun-Purdue Staff: John Dillman, Dan Perry, Roger Bartlett, and Richard Huntrods; Others: Tom Shirley, Paul Ooley, Jerry Fankhouser, Lisle Harmon, Andy Boston, and Dr. Jerry Rusch, DVM.
